However, as we age our skin tends to slow down its natural ability to repair itself and this is when we start to see the affects of aging on our skin. Several factors affect the way your skin ages: genetics, nutrition, and the environment all play roles in aging skin. It's important to understand these factors in order to maintain healthy mature skin as you age.
Genetics - The amount of natural pigmentation in your skin is an indicator of how your skin will age. Mature skin of people with light colored eyes and fair skin will tend to show more signs of aging versus those with darker colored eyes and more pigmentation.
Nutrition - The old saying was true: "You are what you eat." The nutritional choices you make can have a positive effect on aging skin. Research has shown that vitamins A and E are excellent antioxidants and these are found in green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, and several times of oils. These vitamins are good at fighting off free radicals which are partly responsible for wrinkles and damage to you see in mature skin.
 Environment - External factors such as sun exposure and smoking play a major role in the way aging skin appears. Increased sun exposure can accelerate the aging process due to ultra-violet light which is damaging to skin. Smoking is also known to produce free radicals which contribute to increased wrinkles and skin damage.
Having healthy and vibrant mature skin is easy when you know what circumstances affect aging skin.
- Using a daily moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 will not only keep your skin soft, but also protect against harmful UV rays and wrinkle formation.
- Eat a well-balanced diet rich in vitamin E and A is a good way to maintain aging skin. Vitamin E is also known for its beneficial effects on cardiovascular health which is an added bonus.
- Mature skin does not necessarily mean damaged, wrinkled skin. You can help prevent this by avoiding prolonged sun exposure and if you smoke by quitting.
